Urethane Casting and RTV Molding in Houston, TX
Urethane casting is a manufacturing process that uses 3D printed silicone RTV molds to manufacture production quality end-use parts cast from polyurethane and other materials. Urethane casting is a versatile and cost-effective process that is ideal for a variety of applications, including:
- Product development
- Short-run production
- Replacement parts
The automotive, aerospace, medical, electronics, and consumer goods are a few examples of industries that use urethane-cast parts.
The Urethane Casting Process
The urethane casting process begins with the creation of a master part using a 3D printer or other methods. Next, the master pattern mold is created by pouring silicone around the master part. Once the mold is cured, the master part is removed, leaving a cavity that’s a precise impression of the master part. This mold will be used during the casting process.
Urethane cast parts are manufactured by pouring or injecting a casting material into the cavity of a silicone mold. Casting materials can include flexible, semi-rigid, and rigid polyurethanes, polyurethane rubber, silicone, epoxy, polyester, resin, and more. The material remains in the mold long enough to cure and solidify before removal.
The Advantages of Urethane Casting
Urethane casting provides many advantages over traditional casting manufacturing processes, such as injection molding. These advantages include the following:
- Faster lead times
- Lower tooling costs compared to other methods
- Several different urethane-cast materials are available
- Urethane casting can be used to produce parts with a wide range of properties, including hardness, flexibility, and durability.
- Accurately produces parts with complex geometries and fine details, such as raised print.
- Many options when it comes to finishes and colors. Pigments can be mixed with the cast material to create parts of almost any color.
